What Happens If You Ignore a Windshield Chip?

August 14, 2026 · 5 min read · By the Rock Chip Fix team

Ignoring a windshield chip is the most expensive option on the table. A chip that costs $65 to repair today frequently spreads into an unrepairable crack, and then the only fix is a full windshield replacement at $300 to $1,000 or more.

It is not a matter of if an untreated chip will spread, it is usually a matter of when. Here is why.

Chips are stress fractures, not cosmetic marks

A chip means the outer layer of your laminated windshield has fractured. Every bump, door slam, and pothole sends vibration through that weak point, and the glass flexes slightly every time you drive. Each flex works the crack a little deeper, the same way bending a paperclip back and forth eventually snaps it.

Utah weather speeds everything up

Temperature swings are the biggest accelerator. Glass expands in heat and contracts in cold, and a chip is where that movement concentrates. A cold morning followed by afternoon sun, blasting the defroster on a frozen windshield, or washing a hot windshield with cold water can all turn a stable chip into a running crack in seconds. Utah gives you all of these, sometimes in the same day.

The math of waiting

Repair now: $65 self-pay or $0 with most comprehensive insurance, about 30 minutes, keeps your factory glass and seal. Wait until it spreads: $300 to $600 for a standard replacement, $1,000 or more with camera recalibration, your deductible likely applies, and you lose the factory seal. There is no scenario where waiting saves money.

What to do today if you have a chip

Put a small piece of clear tape over the chip to keep out water and dirt, avoid slamming doors, park in the shade or a garage when you can, and get it repaired within a few days. If you are along the Wasatch Front, we can usually come to you the same day you call.

Common questions

How fast does a chip turn into a crack?

It can happen in minutes with a temperature shock, or it can sit stable for months. There is no reliable way to predict it, which is why repair sooner is always safer.

Does clear tape actually help?

Yes. Tape keeps moisture and grit out of the break, which makes for a cleaner, clearer repair. It does not stop spreading, so treat it as a temporary step.

If it already cracked, can it still be repaired?

If the crack is under about 6 inches and not in the driver's line of sight, usually yes. Longer cracks typically need a replacement.

Have a chip right now?

We come to you across the Wasatch Front, often the same day. $65 for the first chip, $35 each additional, or $0 with most insurance.
