5 Types of Windshield Chips: Bullseye, Star Break, and More

July 17, 2026 · 5 min read · By the Rock Chip Fix team

Not all windshield chips are the same. Glass technicians group them into five main types: bullseye, star break, combination break, half moon, and surface pit. The good news is that all five are usually repairable when they are small and fresh.

Knowing which type you have helps you describe the damage when you book, and sets expectations for how the finished repair will look.

1. Bullseye

The most common chip: a round, dark circle with a cone shape underneath, like a target. Bullseyes repair beautifully because the damage is contained and resin flows into the cone evenly. Fresh bullseyes often end up 80 to 95 percent less visible after repair.

2. Star break

A central impact point with short cracks radiating outward like a star. Repairable as long as the legs stay short. The resin has to be worked down each leg, so star breaks take a bit more time, but they hold up well once filled.

3. Combination break

A bullseye with star legs: a round impact circle plus radiating cracks. This is the most common type from highway rock strikes. Still very repairable, just the most involved of the chip family because both the cone and the legs need resin.

4. Half moon

A partial bullseye, a half-circle caused by a glancing impact instead of a direct hit. Repairs just as well as a full bullseye and is common on Utah highways where rocks strike at an angle.

5. Surface pit

A tiny nick where a small piece of glass is missing but nothing has cracked beneath it. Pits are the easiest repair of all: a drop of resin, a cure, and a polish. Many drivers accumulate pits over years and never notice until one chips deeper.

Which type do you have?

You do not need to diagnose it yourself. Text us a photo and we will identify it, confirm it is repairable, and give you a price on the spot. Every type above is covered by the same pricing: $65 for the first chip, $35 for each additional.

Common questions

Which chip type repairs best?

Bullseyes and half moons usually disappear the most. Star breaks and combination breaks hold just as strongly but may leave faint legs visible.

Does chip type affect the price?

Not with us. Every repairable chip is the same price: $65 for the first, $35 for each additional one.

Can you fix a chip that has dirt in it?

Usually yes. We clean the break before injecting resin. Older, contaminated chips may stay slightly more visible after repair, but the strength is restored the same way.

Have a chip right now?

We come to you across the Wasatch Front, often the same day. $65 for the first chip, $35 each additional, or $0 with most insurance.
