Rock Chip Repair vs. Windshield Replacement: How to Know Which You Need

The short answer: if the damage is smaller than a quarter, any crack is shorter than 6 inches, it is not directly in the driver's line of sight, and it is at least a couple of inches from the windshield edge, it can almost always be repaired. Anything bigger or in a worse spot usually means replacement.

That one-minute check covers most situations. Here is the reasoning behind each rule so you can judge your own damage with confidence.

The size test

Repair resin works by filling a small cavity and bonding the glass back together. Once damage grows past the size of a quarter, there is too much broken surface area for resin to restore full strength. Smaller than a quarter and you are nearly always in repair territory.

The crack length test

A short crack radiating from the impact point can be repaired if it stays under about 6 inches, roughly the length of a dollar bill. Longer cracks have usually released too much stress from the glass and will keep spreading even after a repair attempt.

The location test

Two spots disqualify a repair. First, damage directly in the driver's line of sight: even a good repair leaves a faint blemish, and anything that could distract the driver is a replacement call. Second, damage within about 2 inches of the edge: the edge of the windshield carries structural load, and edge damage weakens the glass in a crash.

When repair is clearly the right call

Repair is faster (about 30 minutes), cheaper ($65 versus $300+), keeps your factory seal intact, and is usually free with comprehensive insurance. If your damage passes the three tests above, repair it quickly before it spreads into replacement territory.

Common questions

Can a chip in my line of sight be repaired?

Technically yes, but it is not recommended. A repair leaves a faint mark where the impact was, and anything in the driver's direct view should be replaced for safety.

What if my crack is longer than 6 inches?

Long cracks usually need a full replacement. We do not do replacements, but we will tell you honestly and point you toward a shop we trust.

How do I get a definite answer?

Send us a photo by text or use our instant estimate form. We can usually tell you in a few minutes whether it is repairable.

Have a chip right now?

We come to you across the Wasatch Front, often the same day. $65 for the first chip, $35 each additional, or $0 with most insurance.
